I recently wrote a blog post on how to be kinder to yourself. Now, taking what you learned from that post and combining it with the tips I give you in this post, you will have a good idea of how to build yourself up rather than tear yourself down. The time has come for you to finally work on building your self-esteem. You deserve to feel good about yourself.
Simple exercises to boost your self-esteem:
1. Practice self-awareness
When you are feeling down about yourself, take notice of the moment before you started to have those feelings. Remember the negative thoughts and words you say to yourself. Become aware of their impact.
Then reframe those negative words to realistic, more positive words. (I give some examples of this in my post "How to be Kinder to Yourself"). By being more aware of when we put ourselves down, it becomes easier to stop the behavior more quickly.
Tip: QUIET YOUR INNER CRITIC.
2. Imagine saying your words to a loved one
Pretend as though you had said those negatives thoughts or statements to someone you care about. Take note of that impact.
Then imagine saying the loving things you would rather say to that loved one, to yourself.
3. Grab a journal
Write down memories, images or experiences that remind you of your best qualities and moments to be proud of.
Write feely about your current feelings about yourself, and then take the time to focus on the positive attributes you possess.
4. Take pride in your appearance
Maintain your personal hygiene. Wear clean, pressed clothes. Have fun dressing up. When we look good, we feel good.
LET GO of perfectionism. Instead of picking apart your body and appearance, thank each of your different body parts for what they DO and provide you, rather than how much you hate them.
This also includes exercise. Exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant. I am not telling you to exercise to lose weight. I am suggesting you to exercise to help you boost your mood and strength!
5. Do ESTEEMABLE things
Give yourself a challenge and go after it. Accomplish something and recognize your efforts.
When we engage in activities that allow us to feel good, our self-esteem can continue to rise.
Examples: volunteering, help out a friend, accomplishing a goal, knocking off the items on our to-do list, completing a project, exercising, engaging in our hobbies
6. Do right action
When faced with a decision, do your best to go in the direction of lifting yourself or someone else up.
When we take the route of self-destruction or even just the "easier" route, we tend to experience more consequences in the end. When we do the right thing, we feel better about ourselves.
