Tapping Your Way to Emotional Freedom

Tapping is a technique I often teach clients struggling with issues such as anxiety, weight loss, trauma, difficulty processing emotions, and self-esteem, to name a few. The emotional freedom technique of tapping provides relief for several emotional and physical issues, by utilizing the tapping of pulse points on our hands, face and underarm while repeating negative and eventually positive statements to ourselves to help us process unresolved emotional processes. Our emotions can manifest themselves into physical ailments. For example, anxiety and trauma becomes manifested in our bodies not only cognitively (thoughts) and emotionally (feelings), but also causes physical symptoms. 

 

The technique of tapping requires us to focus on the "negative" emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a traumatic memory, an unresolved problem -- anything that is bothering us. While maintaining a mental and verbal focus on the issue, we use our fingertips to tap 5-7 times each on 12 of our body’s "meridian points" (see below) while repeating statements. We set up the process by focusing on a negative statement, followed by a positive statement. We continue with the process, getting deeper into the issue, speaking out loud our emotions, fears, and insecurities, while trying to end on a positive note.

 

Examples of set-up statements may include:

 

“Even though I feel this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I’m anxious about my interview, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I’m feeling this anxiety about my financial situation, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I panic when I think about ______, I deeply and completely accept myself. ”
“Even though I’m worried about how to approach my boss, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
“Even though I’m having trouble breathing, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

 

Tapping on the pulse points – while concentrating on accepting and resolving the negative emotion – will help us "tap into" our body’s energy. By accessing our body's energy, we are able to restore it to a balanced state --  mending the negative emotions and physical symptoms that stem from our body's energy disruption.
