What to Talk about in Therapy

One thing patients always seem to struggle with is finding something “good” to talk about in therapy. While this is a valid thought once going into a session, especially as a new patient, there are a few things to consider when trying to figure out your choice “topic.”

First off - there is no right or wrong thing to talk about! The thing about therapy is it’s for your benefit.

There’s no topic too big or small when it comes to your sessions. From relationship problems to forgetting to do a task you had been meaning to do at work - every issue is valid and you have all the more reason to bring up anything that bothers you to your therapist!

Additionally, don’t count out the fact that your therapist may have questions for you. You aren’t expected to run the show at your therapy sessions, and neither is your therapist. The sooner you understand that this is a collaborative effort, the better! Treat your sessions as conversations with a friend and see just how much pressure falls off your shoulders.

The best rule of thumb we can give for therapy sessions is to bring up whatever is bothering you as you walk in the door. Whether it’s something that happened on your drive there or a few weeks ago, directly addressing what’s on your mind is always a great route to go.

If you struggle to find things to talk about with your therapist - tell them! Therapists are here to help you and can always offer talking points or follow up on things discussed in the past. There’s no reason to hide your feelings from your therapist because they’re here to help you.

At the end of the day, therapists don’t expect you to know what to say every single time you come in. Everyone has an off day. We are only human, after all, and no one can hold it together perfectly all the time.

Keep in mind, no one has therapy all figured out - not even your therapist! You aren't expected to have a given topic before you walk in the door of your session.
